One of the most empowering tools that has arrived in recent years for small businesses is Canva. Canva lets you stay on brand while you create beautiful designs for your small business with ease. Your creative options are practically endless ― letterheads, logos, invitations, social media templates, all while using your brand’s fonts and colors. Canva is versatile, convenient, and just plain awesome.
The biggest temptation of Canva that will draw you off-brand are the premade templates. These templates look great. They display awesome designs using trendy fonts, layouts and colors. But they will never be on-brand for you. Resist the temptation to use fonts and elements that aren’t yours.
The good news is that Canva’s streamlined interface makes it easy to always implement your brand elements. So if you do choose to work off a premade template, you can easily convert all of your brand’s fonts and colors.
How can you import your brand’s content? Simple! Go to your Canva dashboard and click on Your Brand. Here you will see the option to import your brand’s colors, fonts, and logos.
Now let’s learn how to create your own custom design via Canva!
Choose your Dimensions
After you log in, you’ll see a screen where you can choose the dimensions you’d like your design to be.
Begin your Design
Fill in the background with the color of your choice or drag and drop a photo from your upload section to your background. You can also add a filter or an effect to your photo.
Add your Text
On the far left of your screen, choose the text icon. At the top of the column, you’ll see your approved brand fonts.
Select “Add Heading” to get started. Once you’ve clicked the text style you want, you’ll have the option to change the color, font size, etc…
Adding Shapes and Icons
On the far left of your screen, choose the elements icon. Select the icon that corresponds with the element you’re looking for ― grid, frame, shape, line, etc…
Clicking one of the options displayed will drop the shape onto your design. You will now have the option to change its color, size, etc…
Changing its size or proportions is simple, just drag one of the corner handles to adjust.
Download your Design
Satisfied with your design? Then it’s time to download. In the upper right-hand corner of your screen, you’ll see a button that says download. Click the button. You’ll have the option of downloading your design in a few different formats ― JPG, PNG, PDF Standard or PDF Print.
Here’s what each of those options mean:
JPG: Standard image type. Perfect for photo based images.
PNG: Also standard image type. Use PNG if the majority of your template is text or shape based. Also if you have a transparent background.
PDF – Standard: Intended for web viewing. This is the only file type that will preserve any links used in your design.
PDF – Print: Intended for professional printing. This will export your file with a color profile and resolution that are better suited for high-quality printing.
After choosing your desired file type, click download and voila! You’re all finished!
