Congratulations! You’ve purchased the Genesis Framework and a Genesis child theme and now you’re ready to get started. Not sure where to go from here? We can help. We’ve created a checklist to help get you started!
Read the Theme Documentation
Our first step, and the most important step, is to read the documentation for your theme located here. It’s really important that you familiarize yourself with your new WordPress theme. This will help you understand how it works!
Locate your theme in our documentation and read up on our step-by-step instructions on how to install your new WordPress theme. It’s super helpful to review each step before you get started with the installation process.
Begin the Installation Process
Login to your hosting control panel. Install WordPress on your hosting account. Here over to your Wordpress dashboard. Click on Appearance > Themes. Install the Genesis Framework first (this is super important!) then install your Genesis Child Theme. Install and Configure the recommend plugins that are listed in the documentation.
Import the Demo Content
If you’re setting up a website completely from scratch, it’s recommended that you import the demo content and widgets. The files needed to complete this step are included in your theme file. The content file ends with .xml and the widget content ends with .wie
Not sure how to install the demo content? Head over to your plugins section and install and activate the Widget Importer & Exporter plugin. Next, click on Tools > Import. Click on Install WordPress. Once it’s installed, upload the .xml file and follow the instructions. Next, click on Tools > Widget Importer & Exporter. Upload the .wie file and follow the instructions.
Import the Demo Content
If you are setting up a new website, you can install the demo content and widgets. The files you need are in your theme file, plus in your child theme’s documentation. The content file ends with .xml and the widget content ends with .wie.
Set Up on an Existing Website
If you’re installing your new theme on an existing website, please follow the instructions below.
Deactivate any active caching plugins. Often, caching plugins prevent edits and customizations from being accepted and can make the design process take longer. Feel free to reactivate the plugins when you’re done.
Regenerate your thumbnails once you activate your new theme. How do you do this? Navigate to Plugins and install and activate the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin. Navigate to Tools > Regenerate Thumbnails and follow the instructions.
And there you have it! Feel free to browse our FAQ section for additional tips, tricks and tutorials!
