Having a pretty blog is important, and by pretty I mean simple, clean cut and easy to navigate. There’s nothing worse than visiting a blog that is totally unorganized and cluttered from the header to the footer. Here’s a few tips on how to make your blog more pretty.
Clean up your Sidebar
Resist the temptation to add every single blog directory button you have ever joined to your sidebar. Minimize your sidebar. Doing so will increase the amount of white space on your page which is a quick way to make your blog look cleaner. Having a clean sidebar will also help your visitors focus on your content, the most important aspect of your blog.
Use Images that Fit the Width of your Content
For example, if your content is 500px wide make your photos 500px wide. This works wonders for the overall look of your blog. Everything looks a bit cleaner when your text and photos line up on both sides of the page.
Customize your Blog Images
Customize your blog images to include text, comments, etc… I often create a custom image for each blog post complete with the blog post title and tagline. This is a super easy way to add a bit more personality to your images while making your blog look unique and polished.
Diversify your Typography
Take a break from Arial, Century Gothic and Georgia. Check out GoogleFonts (free) or Typekit (premium) to help diversify your fonts. This will help give your blog a refreshed and updated look. Check out Smashing Magazine’s post about typefaces to help you customize the typography on your blog.
Simplify your Navigation
Simplify your navigation by creating drop-down menus. This will help organize your menu options. Your navigation menu is one of the first things that your visitors see. Reduce clutter, and don’t overwhelm your visitors with a ton of menu options all at once.
